About This Quote

I close my eyes, gripping the empty clothes closer to me, shaking my head against the truth. is a poem by William Shakespeare. It is part of the play Julius Caesar. At the time, the Roman Republic was under attack by the forces of the tyrant Pompey.

The poet presents his own personal view of what will happen to Brutus, who, at the time of the play, had been outmaneuvered by Caesar and was sure to be defeated in battle. At this point in his life, Brutus has been betrayed by both Caesar and his own political allies. In this scene he muses how he could have avoided all this disaster if he had not been so enamored with glory for himself and his countrymen.

He asserts that he did not want to be a conspirator against Caesar but his own best friend and that it was necessary for him to take up arms against Caesar in order to save Rome from a tyrant.
